Before I robbed that store, I was a construction worker for the better part of five years. That was how I took care of myself and Alaina until I was laid off right before my son was born. I knew everything there was to know about the construction business, so when I walked into the building, I walked in with a false air of confidence. Like I knew they wouldn’t get anyone better than me. Like they needed me more than I needed them.

After a ten-minute wait, I heard the steady click-clack of high heeled shoes coming down the hall. I stood to my feet to greet the person, but I was completely caught off guard when I realized that it was the beautiful, broken woman from the salon.
